Coffee Shop

MARINA DEL REY, CA

This small retail building was designed for a busy corner in Marina Del Rey to house a gourmet coffee shop. The general design draws inspiration from the sailboats docked in the nearby marina. The large shade structures, supported by tall steel pipe columns and lateral bracing that evoke ships’ masts and rigs, define outdoor seating areas and provide needed shade on the south side of the building. The main interior seating area is surrounded by glazing and projects out much like the bow of a ship; while the kitchen area is tucked away behind the more static, rectangular portion of the building.

The entitlement process involved obtaining a Conditional Use Permit with the City of Los Angeles and reconciling an existing on-grade parking lot that was jointly used by an adjacent restaurant.
